Chapter 3HREE Maarten Spruyt

January 24 - May 3, 2020  /  Het HEM, Zaandam, Netherlands

Inspired by Susan Sontag’s influential article Against Interpretation (1964), Chapter 3HREE Maarten Spruyt evades the haze of analytic interpretation by specifically appealing to the human capacity to create inner worlds. “What is important now”, says Sontag, “is to recover our senses. We have to learn to see more, hear more, feel more.”

The group exhibition presents the work of 27 artists and takes the impressive architecture of Het HEM as a starting point. A large section of the immersive presentation is hosted in the subterranean shooting range of the former bullet factory where visitors enter the space one by one. In the basement, the virtual absence of outside offers a powerful context for an internalized experience at a radically sensitive level.

Participating artists: Anotherview, Ivana Bašić, Bianca Bondi, Tessel Braam, Sander Breure and Witte van Hulzen, David Claerbout, Elspeth Diederix, Desiree Dolron, Bram Ellens, Cyprien Gaillard, John Gerrard, Noa Giniger, Christie van der Haak, Tamar Harpaz, Anthony Hernandez, Maartje Korstanje, Juul Kraaijer, Jung Lee, Tony Matelli, Geert Mul, Daniel Mullen, Ossip, Carla van Riet, Maria Roosen, Maaike Schoorel, Tanja Smeets and John Smith.

The artworks in the exhibition have been compiled by Het HEM curator Rieke Vos and guest curator Maarten Spruyt.

The exhibition #Material4.0 sets itself the task of performing a reality check on the virtual and real worlds’ current interdependency, as seen from an artistic viewpoint. Taking as its starting point the omnipresent theme of digitalization and its related concept of Industry 4.0, the exhibition aims to explore the ways in which computer-dependent automation and digitalization are reflected within an artistic context. As such, the presentation in Sindelfingen focuses on the artists’ matter of material.

Starting from the widely discussed term Internet of things, the exhibition shows positions that deal with the artistic material in an increasingly digitized world. Young artists from the generation of digital natives are shown alongside historical positions. For the exhibition, works of art are created that deal directly with the consequences of digitization and carry out a reality check between the digital and the real world.

In addition, as part of the production art festival Drehmoment of Kulturregion Stuttgart, the project More Human Than Human by the artist Christian von Borries will be presented.
