“I love you with all my heart” or “You belong to me” are prevalent formulas for articulating love. As cute phrases from pop songs or films, they are anchored in our culture without this sort of language actually conveying genuine relatedness.

What happens when words which are in many cases worn out are isolated and places in a more free context? With the distanced perspective of another linguistic culture, the South Korean photographer Jung Lee has collected emotional formulas such as these. She situates them as neon lettering in deserted landscapes and photographs them. The works are experiments in the reciprocity between text and image, but also between landscape and sculptural elements. The series is inspired by Roland Barthes’ essay Fragments of the Language of a Love. The title Aporia (Greek for “hopelessness”) alludes to the fact that the lover ultimately remains alone in the attempt to put his longings into words.

Clubgenki, a pub in London, makes it possible for white men to meet Asian women under the pretext of cultural exchange. Jung Lee recorded the encounters. Filmic lighting on the faces of the women causes the viewer to act like a voyeur who looks at the women as if they were exotic objects. At the same time, the gazes of the men convey the tension in the space and express desire, objectification, or the perception of difference. Questions arise as to identity and morality in the handling of ethnic diversity.
